The Gospel

You are of great value to God and He wants to be in a meaningful friendship and relationship with you. However, God can seem distant from us and we can feel separate from him.

The reason is because God is Light and we live within darkness. We’ve all told lies, taken things that haven’t belonged to us, wished someone was out of our lives forever or wanted really, really badly someone or something that someone else has. It’s these acts that separate us from God. The Bible says “It’s your sins that have cut you off from God” (Isaiah 59v2 NLT).

Deep down inside we know things aren’t right in the world or with us. And this can lead to shame, guilt, bitterness and anger and it’s these emotions that can make us want to hide from God. So we can in some way, in fact, push God away rather than accept his unconditional love for us.

God loves us and so he sent his Son, Jesus on a rescue mission. Jesus took one for the team by wilfully having all our lies, stealing, bitterness, shame, guilt and God’s anger towards those things and He had them all placed on his shoulders. The Bible says, “God put the wrong on him who never did anything wrong, so that we could be put right with God” (2 Corinthians 5:21 MSG). Jesus died on the cross knowing that he was winning forgiveness of sin for all mankind. Isn’t that awesome!

And then God, using his power, raised Jesus from the dead several days later. He established a new pattern for mankind to follow and a promise that God will raise us to from the dead to live with him in eternity.

An early follower of Jesus called Paul wrote this:

The first thing I did was place before you what was placed so emphatically before me: that the Messiah died for our sins, exactly as Scripture tells it; that he was buried; that he was raised from death on the third day, again exactly as Scripture says; that he presented himself alive to Peter, then to his closest followers, and later to more than five hundred of his followers all at the same time, most of them still around (although a few have since died); that he then spent time with James and the rest of those he commissioned to represent him; and that he finally presented himself alive to me” – 1 Corinthians 15:3-8.

So you see God has done it all. There is nothing more we have to do to get right with God. He is holding out his hand of friendship to you today and He will continue to hold out His hand until the day you die. So what now?

All you have to do is take God’s hand. And this starts with a simple prayer which you can do by yourself or with someone who you know also loves God.

Dear God, I’m so sorry for the things that I have done wrong. I know they upset you and they were not good for me either. Thank you so much for sending your Son, Jesus, who took all my sin and died for me on the cross, so that I could be forgiven by you. Please forgive me for going my own way because now I want to go your way. I want to be in a friendship with you forever. Therefore I place my trust in you and you alone. Amen.
