Why become a member?
There are many images in scripture that help us to understand what the church is and how it should function, such as a body, holy temple, bride etc. therefore, we encourage people to become committed members of Beacon Church Bridport.
One of the images found in scripture relating to God’s people is that of a flock. The Elders are appointed as leaders who oversee the local church as described in Titus 1, 1 Timothy 3 and 1 Peter 5. From these scriptures it is quite clear that leaders have a responsibility to oversee, care for and build up God’s people. Peter writes in 1 Peter 5:2, ‘Be shepherds of God’s flock that is under your care, serving as overseers’.
God’s people are called ‘a flock’ and the leaders are called ‘shepherds’, which is a description harmonious throughout the Old and New Testament. Therefore it is essential for the shepherds to know who their ‘sheep’ are so that they can take care of them.
Another way scripture describes the local church is as a family, so becoming a member of Beacon Church is like joining a family. Some commitment is needed so that relational issues can be dealt with in a biblical, loving and godly way; under the oversight of the leadership.
Having fellowship with someone means sharing lives, ideals and goals in a special relationship. This principle is important in our relationship with God and others in the church. The early church made this a priority as seen in Acts 2:42, therefore at Beacon Church, Bridport we also make this a priority.
We understand that becoming a member of Beacon Church Bridport is a big commitment and is therefore a decision that shouldn’t be taken lightly. However, if you do decide to join us then we look forward to welcoming you with open arms!
What does becoming a member mean?
God has given Beacon Church Bridport a big vision to help us to participate and be proactive in fulfilling the great commission given by Jesus in Matthew 28:16-20. Our vision is as follows:
‘Beacon Church Bridport is committed to following Jesus Christ, living by and being led by the Holy Spirit and enjoying an intimate relationship with the Father; by submitting ourselves to the authority of the Word of God. We are proactive in our faith and in our love for one another as family. Working together to be ‘fishers of men’ and to equip the saints, empowering those called to stay and releasing those called to be sent. By doing this we believe we will be a ‘beacon’ in Bridport, the surrounding area, the nation and beyond: by ‘being light and bringing life.’
By becoming a member you would be joining with us in this vision and together we will see God use us to impact our own lives and the lives of others.
